The Weaknesses of Othello Throughout the beginning of Shakespeare s play, Othello, the protagonist, Othello himself, is portrayed as a powerful and courageous man. The audience is led to believe that he is a sympathetic character and a brave war hero. As the story progresses, this view seems to shift. Iago begins to play with Othello’s emotions and Othello starts to make rash decisions. In his Othello’s final great speech, he exposes his thoughts on the situation as well as his selfish motives. The mindset that he reveals during this speech turns out to be one of the main elements of his fatal flaw which causes his tragic downfall. Othello’s great human weakness is comprised of a couple of components. The first being the great feeling of jealousy that overtakes Othello, the result of his love for Desdemona and the manipulation of Iago. The final component of his weakness is vulnerability to other people’s opinions, even in his final moments of life. Just about everyone who has read the play can most likely agree that jealousy got the best of Othello. This feeling of jealousy can be found in most of the characters in the play. Iago’s manipulative motives are based off jealousy. Roderigo’s cooperation with Iago is also due to jealousy. And most significantly, Othello’s violent actions are the result of his intense jealousy.
